Eminem has apologized to Rihanna in his new album, after 10 years.
The 48-year-old rapper dropped his surprise album Music to Be Murdered By—Side B on Friday. On the album track Zeus, he atones for supporting Chris Brown after the infamous 2009 domestic assault in lyrics that leaked in 2019.
“But, me, long as I re-promise, to be honest, / And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna,” Eminem raps, “For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri / It wasn’t meant to cause you grief. Regardless, it was wrong of me.”
In the 2009 leaked track, Eminem - who has a 24-year-old daughter, Hailie Jade, said he had Brown’s back after he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, “Of course, I side with Chris Brown / I’d beat a bitch down too.”
The said lyrics were recorded for his 2009 album Relapse was leaked last year. His spokesperson released a statement following the leak, “This is a leak of something that’s over 10 years old. After Eminem recorded it, he scrapped it and rewrote it. Obviously, he and Rihanna have a great relationship.”
Rihanna, 32, has collaborated with Eminem on the songs Love the Way You Lie in 2010, Numb in 2012, The Monster in 2013, and was also on tour in 2014.
Chris Brown, 31, served five years of probation for the 2009 assault and was also sentenced to 1,400 hours of community service. In August 2013, he was assigned an additional 1,000 hours of community service. The pair reconciled in 2012 but split in 2013.
