Frances Bean Cobain talks Dad Kurt Cobain’s suicide, mother Courtney Love, dad’s fortune!
The 26-year-old visual artist Frances Bean Cobain reveals the age at which she was told her father Kurt Cobain was a victim of suicide. On April 8, 1994, Cobain had taken his own life, when Frances Bean Cobain was only an eighteen-month-old baby.
Learning about her father’s suicide
In a 2019 interview with RuPaul‘s What’s the Tee?, she revealed that she was only 5 years old when her mother Courtney Love told her about her father’s death. She shared,
“Yeah, so I wasn’t told my dad committed suicide until the age of 5. And so my mom preemptively sent me to therapy a year before telling me so that I could be eased into that conversation. You can’t really explain that to an 18-month-old.”
As per Frances, her mother had thought well and prepared her before telling her the ugly truth. Frances also praised her mother for choosing to send her to therapy at such a young age, which has developed her communication skills.
Frances confessed,
“I’ve found that I’m a very good communicator. I’ve been referred to as a translator I have a really good capacity to regurgitate other people’s sentiments in a secular way to make them understand and that’s absolutely due to my communication skills I obtained in therapy. That was really beneficial to talk about myself and express my feelings and emotions and mentality in a communicative and non-intense way.”
Relationship with mother Courtney Love
Frances Bean Cobain and her mother have been on a rocky path when it comes to their relationship, especially due to Courtney Love’s decades-long battle with addiction.
Cobain spoke about growing up with her mother, “Some kids were like, ‘f–k I didn’t do my essay,’ and I’d be like, ‘f–k I had to call the paramedics to get my mom’s stomach pumped last night’ … just a different set of priorities.” That has left some deep wounds in their relationship. She also admitted she was “so f–king bitter and angry and upset and resentful for a really long time.”
As time heals all wounds, things seem to be much better between the mother-daughter duo. Cobain went on to talk about the positive aspects of her mother and how she wants to love and support her.

Speaking of relationship with her mother, Cobain shared,
“I am somebody who only wants to provide the role for her as somebody who loves her and supports her and has a nonjudgmental understanding of empathy and compassion that maybe nobody else in her life has. I want our relationship to be based on open communication and love and truth and awareness about how our actions affect the other person. I hope that we’re bringing in the era of balance.”
Frances Bean Cobain feels guilty!
In the same podcast interview, Cobain revealed that she feels rather guilty about inheriting her father's fortune. She explained,
“My relationship to money is different because I didn’t earn it. And so it’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of. I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone earned myself.”
She further shared she has been able to manage the money better after getting sober in 2016.
So how much money are we talking about? In September 2017, The Blast reported that she earns more than $95,000 a month from her late father’s publicity rights! The data was leaked in her 2017 divorce from now ex-husband Isaiah Silva.
Silva even got to keep Kurt Cobain’s famous guitar, the one which he had played during his MTV Unplugged performance in November 1993. The guitar is priced at millions of dollars, according to The Blast.
