Who is Adrian Chiles?

Adrian Chiles is a British presenter, actor, and author. He is best known as a former host of ITV’s That Sunday Night Show and its sports presenter. Recently, he was featured in the reality show Drinkers Like Me which exposed his heavy drinking habit.

Adrian Chiles – Age, Parents, Siblings

Adrian Chiles was born on 21 March 1967 in Quinton, Birmingham, England. His father’s name is Peter Chiles and his mother’s name is Ljerka Chiles. There is no clear information on how many siblings but in a 2009 interview with The Guardian, he did mention he has a brother named Neville Chiles.

"My brother's got a great place in the Cotswolds, and I go up there and stay with him and his wife and their kids, and I feel relaxed."

Education, Ethnicity

At the age of 4, the family moved to Hagley, Worcestershire. There he attended Haybridge High School from which he graduated. Then he joined the University of London while working in his father’s scaffolding business. He graduated from the same with a degree in English literature. He also studied Journalism.

His father is of English descent and his mother is of Croatian descent.

Adrian Chiles – Girlfriend, Wife, Children, Divorce

Adrian Chiles was married to Jane Garvey, presenter of Woman's Hour on Radio 4. They had tied the knot in September 1998 in Swansea. They have two daughters together named Evelyn Katarina Chiles (born Jan 2000) and Sian Mary Chiles (born March 2003).

And in June 2008 they separated and their divorce was finalized in October 2009.

He went on to date Catherine Tate after meeting her on the game show That Sunday Night Show. They made their relationship known to the public in September 2012 but reportedly broke up just after a year together.

In July 2019, Chiles was rumored to be dating Labour MP Rosie Duffield.

Early Days

When at the University, he was an amateur actor and had appeared in the Crescent Theatre’s Once A Catholic and Sandy Wilson's The Cheese. Later on, he also applied for Civil Service and for MI5 but was rejected from both.

Chiles joined the BBC’s Business Breakfast as a part of his experience. He has also written for BBC programs such as So What Do You Do All Day? (2003), Asian Millionaires, Royal Millions, My Mediterranean with Adrian Chiles.  He left his work on the BBC in 2009.

As a presenter his well-known works are The Apprentice: You're Fired! (2006–2009), The One Show (2007–2010), Working Lunch (1994–2007), Have I Got News for You (April 2007), Christine and Adrian's Friendship Test, Drinkers Like Me (2018), That Sunday Night Show (2011–2012), Match of the Day 2 (2004–2010), Daybreak (2010–2011), ITV Sport (2010–2015).

Adrian has also worked on the radio. He was featured as a presenter in the shows Financial World Tonight, Chiles on Saturday (later changed to Chiles on Friday), Drive on Fridays, 5 Live Daily.

In addition to being a presenter, he is also an actor. He has appeared in movies such as Sex Lives of the Potato Men (2004), That Mitchell and Webb Look (2006) and My Mediterranean with Adrian Chiles (2016).

His book titled We Don't Know What We're Doing was published in 2007.

Co-stars

On the set of Sex Lives of the Potato Men, Chiles starred alongside Mackenzie Crook, Lucy Davis, Johnny Vegas, Helen Latham.

Adrian Chiles – Alcoholism, Depression

Adrian Chiles revealed that when he lost his job in 2015 at ITV, it took a toll on his mental health. He shared that he took anti-depressants and has always battled depression and anxiety. He added he began his 'mindless' drinking to cope with depression.

Chiles who does not think he is an alcoholic said his life is 'built' around alcohol.

"The word "alcoholic" is outdated, but I am undoubtedly dependent on alcohol to some extent – and if I am, thousands of others are. The only days I literally drank nothing were when I was broadcasting in the evening."

He also revealed his anxiety:

"Anxiety had begun to affect my work. It became difficult for me to get the words out in the right order.

I'd gone from somebody who could ad lib for hours on end to the opposite. One night at Wembley, I looked at the autocue and I could hardly get the words out.

There was actually very little to do in presenting the football – ask a pre-prepared question of each pundit, throw to a break – and the less there was to do, the harder I found it."

A recent ultrasound showed that he is at risk of liver failure, cirrhosis, and ultimately death. He has now vowed to reduce his alcohol consumption.
