While on vacation in the United States, he decided to audition for the film Flipped. Callan McAuliffe won the role of Bryce Loski, the lead character. The film which was based on the 2001 novel of the same title by Wendelin Van Draanen was released in 2010 and was directed by Rob Reiner. This role helped him break into the Hollywood entertainment industry.

Over the years Callan McAuliffe has starred in the films I Am Number Four (2011), The Great Gatsby (2013), Kite (2014), Robot Overlords (2014), The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015), Hacker (2016), The Legend of Ben Hall (2017), Summer Night (2019), etc.
He has also worked in the TV films Underground: The Julian Assange Story (2012), Ten: Murder Island (2017), and in the TV series Cloudstreet (2011), and Homeland (2014). McAuliffe has been portraying the recurring character Alden in AMC’s horror series The Walking Dead since 2017. He was cast in season 8 of the series and will be starring in the final season (season 11) of the series.
