After his mother passed away when he was 10 years old, he and his sibling, brother Kester James, chose to live in a children's home instead of moving to the United States to live with relatives.

Early Days
James aspired to be a rugby player but deviated into acting. He began his career as an actor in 1988, his debut appearance being on an episode of the TV series Screenplay. This was followed by appearances in other TV series, The Orchid House (1991), Out of the Blue (1995-1996), and Cold Feet (1998).
He was cast in the 2000 TV film Storm Damage, for which he earned a BAFTA TV Award for Best Single Drama nomination. Although he did not win the award, his career did take the right turn.
