Who is Halima Aden?
Halima Aden is a fashion model and American, Somali by nationality. She is signed into IMG Models and was the first woman to wear a hijab in the 2016's Miss Minnesota USA pageant and the first woman with a Hijab and Burkini to be featured in Sports Illustrated.
Halima Aden – Age, Parents, Siblings
Halima Aden’s birth took place on September 19, 1997, in Kenya at the Kakuma Refugee Camp. She has Somali roots and is not the only child of her parents and has a sibling and a younger brother. Moreover, the name and professions of her mother and father are unknown.
As the Aden family was displaced by the Somali civil war, they lived in Kakuma, the United Nations refugee camp in Kenya. When she was seven years old the family migrated to Minnesota, where she was raised by her single mother. Not much is known about her father.

After graduating from Apollo High School, she enrolled at St Cloud State University. She was voted the school homecoming queen in her senior year of high school. At her college, she was the first Somali student senator.

Before fame
Aden started working at the age of 16 as a hospital aide to support her studies.
Halima Aden first came to attention as a 2016 Miss Minnesota USA beauty pageant contestant while still a freshman at St Cloud State University. What set her apart from the rest of the contestants was that she wore a hijab and then a burkini. She was placed in the top 15 but could not make it any further.
But the loss did not dishearten her. Rather her courage to stand differently amongst the crowd was what made her special. She was soon signed with IMG model agency making her the first hijab-wearing model in the agency.
Worked in
Soon Carine Roitfeld, Vogue Paris editor, and stylist picked her up and featured her in her magazine CR Fashion Book. This was followed by shooting for several magazines — Vogue Arabia, Grazia, Allure, Nike, American Eagle, British Glamour, British Vogue, Paper, Teen Vogue, and the first hijabi to appear in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue.
Halima Aden has also walked for MaxMara SS18, Alberta Ferretti, Yeezy Season 5, and in 2016 Milan Fashion Week, Modest Fashion. She also has served as a preliminary and telecast judge of the Miss USA 2017 pageant.
Aside from modeling, Aden has worked with UNICEF and spoken at Princeton University. She was named an official celebrity UNICEF Ambassador in 2018.
