When his classmates found that he took ballet lessons, they teased him calling him "Ballerina Boy". He began acting at the age of 9. In 1999 he was chosen among over 2,000 boys for the role of Billy Elliot in the dance drama film Billy Elliot. This was followed by minor roles in the films Deathwatch and Nicholas Nickleby, both released in 2002.
In his teen years, Jamie Bell appeared in the films Undertow (2004), The Chumscrubber (2005), King Kong (2005), etc.
