Who is Liam Cunningham?

Liam Cunningham is a stage and screen actor by profession and Irish by nationality. Among all his work, he is most recognized for portraying Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones.

Liam Cunningham’s birth took place on 2 June 1961 in East Wall, Dublin, Ireland. His mother’s name is Kathleen Cunningham and his father's name is  Michael Cunningham. He is not the only child of his parents and was raised in Kilmore West with four siblings, three sisters, and a brother.

Cunningham is a happily married man. He married his longtime girlfriend Colette Cunningham. He had met her when he was just 19. He married her at the age of 22 so that she could come to Africa with Cunningham in January 1984 as they were madly in love.

With his wife, he has three children- two sons and a daughter. Their sons are named Liam Cunningham Jr., and Sean Cunningham, and their daughter is named Ellen Cunningham. He shared in an interview with the Independent,

“My first time on a plane was going to live in Africa. That’s why I’m an actor. Africa. That’s why. That’s why I have my wife of 34 years. I married her because I couldn’t take her out as my girlfriend.”

Although not much is known about his wife and personal life, he is married to Colette without any rumors of divorce or extramarital affairs.

Liam Cunningham – Career

Before fame

In the 1980s Liam Cunningham moved to Zimbabwe for three years. There he maintained electrical equipment at a safari park as well as trained fellow Zimbabwean electricians. After he returned to his home country, he was not satisfied with his work as an electrician. 

So, having decided to pursue acting, he attended acting classes while working in a local theatre.

In 1992, Liam Cunningham landed his debut role in Into the West as a Police Officer. This was followed by minor roles in the films War of the Buttons (1994), A Little Princess (1995), First Knight (1995), and TV series Roughnecks (1994-1995), Cracker  (1995).

Only in 1996 did he land his breakthrough role of Phillotson in the film Jude.

Since 1996, Cunningham has worked in films When the Sky Falls (2000), The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2003), The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor  (2008), Harry Brown (2009), Clash of the Titans (2010), War Horse (2011), Let Us Prey (2014), 24 Hours to Live (2017), among others.

In TV series, he has worked in Too Rich: The Secret Life of Doris Duke (1999), The Clinic (2005), Murphy's Law (2006), Outcasts (2011), Titanic: Blood and Steel (2012), Merlin (2012), to name a few.

In 2012, Liam Cunningham was cast as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones and portrayed the character until the final season.
