Magda Szubanski was born on 12 April 1961 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Her birth name/full name is Magdalene Mary Szubanski. Her mother’s name is Margaret Szubanski and her father’s name was Zbigniew Szubanski. 

Her mother came from a poor family and was of Scottish-Irish descent while her father was from a rich family and of Polish descent. Her parents also have two other children. Her sister is named Barb Szubanski while her brother is named Chris Szubanski. Zbigniew Szubanski was known as an assassin in a counter-intelligence branch of the Polish resistance movement during World War II.

About Magda Szubanski’s education, she attended Siena College, Melbourne where she completed her high school. She then joined the University of Melbourne and graduated from the same with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts.

On 14 February 2012, she came out to reveal her sexuality in a statement. Later in an interview on The Project, she stated that she "absolutely identifies as gay".

After same-sex marriage was favored by the Australian’s vote, Magda shared what it was like to lose her mother just weeks after the announcement.

"It's been... the toughest year of my life without question. Mostly because of mum. But the marriage equality stuff was something I was proud to do. I just felt so nervous the whole time because if I put a foot wrong, I could be blowing it for everyone. I haven't had a proper break since that."

Currently, she is single and is completely focused on her career.

Magda Szubanski – Career

Early Days

While she was at the University of Melbourne, in 1985, she performed Too Cool for Sandals with Tom Gleisner and Michael Veitch. The performance was good luck for Szubanski as her talent was spotted by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s producers.

The producers then contacted her and convinced her to join hands with other friends to create The D-Generation, a television sketch comedy show. The show opened her new opportunities!

Movies, Shows

Soon she was in the team that created the television sketch comedy Fast Forward. Then in 1995, she along with her female friends produced and performed the first all-female Australian sketch comedy program, Big Girl's Blouse. Over time, she was part of various TV programs including Kath & Kim, Dogwoman (1999), Magda's Funny Bits (2006), and Who Do You Think You Are? (2009).

She also has starred in several movies- Babe (1995), Babe: Pig in the City (1998), Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two, and The Golden Compass (2007).

Book / Memoir

Szubanski is also an author and has written an award-winning book. Her memoir Reckoning was published in 2015. Her memoir won her TBA, $40,000 Douglas Stewart Prize for Nonfiction, Book of the Year and Biography of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards.

Magda Szubanski – Health, Weight

In November 2008, she became a spokesperson for the dieting company Jenny Craig. She had been diagnosed with sleep apnoea and weighed 110 kg when she joined Jenny Craig. By July 2009, she had lost 36 kg and weighed 85 kg.

But again she regained weight and was dropped by the company.  However, she did try and lose her weight again which re-signed her to the company. Again in 2014, it was confirmed that she would no longer be an ambassador for the company. Rather Szubanski would continue her weight loss journey in private.
