Jodie Foster faces backlash for calling Gen Z ‘annoying’

Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster shared that young actors – mostly Gen Z – are sometimes frustrating.

In an interview with The Guardian, the 61-year-old said, “They’re really annoying, especially in the workplace.”

She continued, “They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10:30 a.m.’ Or in emails, I’ll tell them, ‘This is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling?’ And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?’”

Foster is not new to the new generation and believes she can help young people searching for breakthroughs in Hollywood.

She has two sons who are in their 20s – Kit Bernard Foster and Charles Berard Foster – who she shares with her ex-partner, film producer Cydney Bernard.

The Silence of the Lambs star said, “They need to learn how to relax, how to not think about it so much, how to come up with something that’s theirs. I can help them find that, which is so much more fun than being, with all the pressure behind it, the protagonist of the story.”

“I do a lot of reaching out to young actresses. I’m compelled. Because it was hard growing up,” she added.

However, her comment was poorly received by Gen Z on social media.

One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Ah the boomers moaning about laziness and can’t stand the idea that this gen are way ahead in their attitudes towards work and giving away too much of themselves.”

Another user simply accused the actress as, “RUDE!!”

“I agree but to be fair, aren’t the older generations to blame for raising them?,” another one chimed in.

Another added, “‘Generations’ is a false construct. There is endless human variation in every age group. Divisive silliness.”

Despite overwhelming criticism, some social media users supported her statements.

“She’s not wrong,” one user defended the True Detective: Night Country star.

“This is why I love Jodie Foster. Same, Jodie.. same,” another wrote.

Jodie Foster also went on to praise 20-year-old Gen Z actress Bella Ramsey – calling the Last of Us and Game of Thrones star an example of an actor emerging in a new “vector of authenticity.”

She had met Ramsey at Elle’s Women in Hollywood celebration, “I reached out to Bella, because we’d never met, and said, ‘I want you to introduce me at this thing’, which is a wonderful event about actors and people in the movies but is also very much a fashion thing. Which means it’s determining who represents us.”

Foster added, “[The organizers] are very proud of themselves because they’ve got every ethnicity, and I’m like, yeah, but all the attendees are still wearing heels and eyelashes. There are other ways of being a woman, and it’s really important for people to see that. And Bella, who gave the best speech, was wearing the most perfect suit, beautifully tailored, and a middle parting and no makeup.”

“We had other things that were good. And I would say: I did the best I could for my generation. I was very busy understanding where I fitted in and where I wanted to be in terms of feminism. But my lens wasn’t wide enough. I lived in an incredibly segregated world,” she continued.
