Last Modified: 9th Sep

Megadeth’s guitarist and founder Dave Mustaine announced on Monday, 17 June 2019 that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer.

He wrote on social media,

“I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on — but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.”

Mustaine has been married to Pamela Anne Casselberry since 2001 and has two children with her- son Justis David Mustaine and daughter Electra Nicole Mustaine.

Dave Mustaine, 57 also said that due to his diagnosis and treatment, Megadeth would be forced to cancel “most shows” for the rest of the year. He also put out the good news for the fans that the band is already back in the studio working on new material. He wrote,

“Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. All up to date information will be at megadeth.com as we get it. Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP.

Meanwhile, Kiko [Loureiro], David [Ellefson], Dirk [Verbeuren] and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia — which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.”

Dave Mustaine, who was the original guitarist of Metallica from 1981 to 1983 further added,

“I’m so thankful for my whole team — family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more. I’ll keep everyone posted. See you soon.”

Megadeth has earned 12 Grammy Nominations, among which they have won a Grammy Awards in 2017.
