Tolman was 8 years old when she began taking acting classes at Fort Bend Community Theatre. Following her college education, she moved to Dallas where she co-founded the Second Thought Theatre.
Allison Tolman began her career in the year 2004. Her debut role was in the TV series Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (2005) where she lent her voice. She has also dubbed the episodes of the series Pîchi gâru (2005), and Witchblade (2006).
Her debut screen appearance came when she was cast in a 2006 episode of the TV series Prison Break- followed by an appearance in the TV series Prison Break (2008). Her breakthrough was as the main character Deputy Molly Solverson in the black comedy crime drama series Fargo (2014-2015).
