Who is Amrita Acharia?

Amrita Acharia is an actress by profession, British by nationality, and Nepalese-Ukrainian by ethnicity. She is best known for her role as Irri in the HBO series Game of Thrones and in the ITV series The Good Karma Hospital as Dr. Ruby Walker.

Amrita Acharia was born on 31 July 1987 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her surname is also spelled, Acharya. She was born to her father Dr. Ganesh Acharya, a gynecologist, and a Ukrainian mother Koozya Dodger who worked as an architect. 

She is not the only child of her parents and has siblings, 3 sisters including an older sister named Maya Acharya and a younger brother Krishanu Acharya. Her parents had met while at medical school in Kyiv. At the age of 7, Acharia moved along with her parents to England as her father had taken a job there.

When she was 13, the family again moved to Tromsø, Norway where she completed her high school. She went on to study drama at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, London, graduating in 2009.

As her parents frequently moved from country to country, she had the advantage of learning, gaining experience, and learning languages. She is fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, English, and Norwegian. She does not speak Nepali but has plans to learn it in the near future.

Her ethnicity includes Nepalese, and Ukrainian.

Amrita Acharia is secretive about her personal life, both past and present. Thus nothing is known about her boyfriends. She is not married sans husband and does not have children.

Amrita Acharia – Career

Before fame

After completing high school in Norway, then 19-year-old Acharia moved to England to pursue a career in acting. Her early roles in TV series were in Casualty (2010), Doctors (2011), and Lapland (2011).

Amrita Acharia landed the recurring role of Irri in seasons 1 and 2 of Game of Thrones (2011-2012). Her character was killed by fellow handmaiden Doreah (played by Roxanne McKee) in season two. Speaking of her death scene in Game of Thrones, she shared,

“I’m waiting for Daenerys to come back so I’m running up the stairs. “Khaleesi, are you back yet?” And the dragons are gone. Out of nowhere, there’s a noose around my neck. I think it’s hard to be strangled onscreen because obviously to an extent to make it look real, you really have to be a bit strangled. So I had massive bruises on my neck the next day. I was proud. Battle scars. Death scenes are fun.”

But the scene did not make it into the final show and was deleted.

Since then Acharia has acted in Acquitted (2016), Red Dwarf (2017), and Dr. Ruby Walker, the main character of The Good Karma Hospital (2017-present). 

In the film section, she has portrayed minor roles in The Devil's Double (2011), Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead (2014), Amar Akbar & Tony (2015), and Welcome to Curiosity (2018), and lent her voice in Missing Link (2019).

While on the set of Game of Thrones, she starred alongside Jacob Anderson, Will Tudor, Roxanne McKee, Bella Ramsey, and Roger Allam to name a few.

She also works with a UK-based children’s charity, ChoraChori which rescues trafficked Nepali children and rape victims. Trafficked children are rescued and brought back from India. The charity also helps in the rehabilitation of trafficked children in Nepali societies.
