Clark Gregg was born on April 2, 1962, as Robert Clark Gregg. His birthplace is in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. His mother's name is Mary Layne Shine and his father's name is Robert Clark Gregg Sr., a Stanford University professor, and an Episcopal priest.
He is the oldest of his parent's children and his three siblings include two sisters and a brother. His sister Courtney Gregg is an artist, and photographer while his brother is named Andrew Gregg.
Growing up, Gregg moved frequently along with his parents. Within the first 17 years of his life, he had lived in seven different cities.

He had attended high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and graduated from the same. After graduation, he enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan University and studied there for two years before dropping out. Several years later, he studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in drama and English in 1986.

Early Days
After dropping out of college, Clark Gregg moved to Manhattan working several odd jobs there. He had worked as a bar back, Guggenheim Museum’s security guard, and a parking valet.
Gregg has had supporting roles in Law & Order (2001), Lovely & Amazing, The Human Stain, In Good Company, Will & Grace, Sports Night, Sex and the City, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and The West Wing. He wrote the screenplay for What Lies Beneath, Trust Me and Choke, while also directing for the latter two.

Clark Gregg is best known for his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson in Marvel movies including Iron Man, The Avengers, Captain Marvel, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and as Agent Coulson in Thor.
He is also a founding member and later held the post of artistic director of off-Broadway Atlantic Theater Company. The company was founded in 1983.
Clark Gregg has revealed that he was an alcoholic. Now, he is sober. He has also earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
