Who is Gleyber Torres?

Gleyber Torres is a baseball player by profession and a Venezuelan by profession. He is a second baseman and shortstop for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball, having played for Chicago Cubs in the minor leagues.

Gleyber Torres’ birth took place on December 13, 1996, in Caracas, Venezuela. He was born Gleyber David Castro Torres to his father Eusebio Torres and his mother Ibelise Castro.

He is not the only child of his parents and has a sibling, a sister. Growing up in a middle-class household and in a politically unstable country, the family faced food shortages, rampant crime, and widespread violence. 

He started playing baseball at the age of four as a center fielder, catcher, pitcher, and eventually shortstop. In high school, Gleyber Torres briefly played basketball but soon quit. Noticing his talents, academies wanted to help Torres become a professional baseball player.

At the age of 14, he moved to Maracay and enrolled in an academy that had contacts with MLB scouts. 

His ethnicity is Venezuelan.

Gleyber Torres married his longtime girlfriend Elizabeth on April 1, 2017. They had met in his hometown of Caracas in 2014. He and his wife welcomed a baby boy named Ethan on March 20, 2022. 

Currently, the couple seems to be living happily without rumors of extra-marital affairs or divorce.

Minor Leagues

Torres signed a contract with Chicago Cubs after they sought him out. The contract, which was signed in 2012, made him an international free agent for a $1.7 million signing bonus. His debut in minor leagues was in 2014 with Arizona Cubs of the Rookie-level Arizona League. 

In the minor leagues, Gleyber Torres played with Boise Hawks, South Bend Cubs, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, etc. On July 25, 2016, Gleyber Torres was traded to New York Yankees. With the team, he played with Tampa Yankees, Scottsdale Scorpions, Trenton Thunder, etc.

Gleyber Torres’ MBL debut was on April 22, 2018, against Toronto Blue Jays. He became the youngest Yankee to homer, at the age of 21. With the team, he has played against Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and Houston Astros, among others
