She fell in love with theater and acting at the age of 14 after her mother took her to a touring production of Steaming in Rockhampton at the Pilbeam Theatre. She began crewing the third year’s production of The Doll while she was a first-year student at drama school.
Thomson began her career as a TV actress in the year 1990. Her first credits were in the episode(s) of the TV series A Country Practice (1993), G.P. (1994), Home and Away (1997), Big Sky (1997), Murder Call (1998), and Water Rats (1996-2001). She has also appeared in the films The Wedding Party (1997) as Emma, Strange Planet (1999), La spagnola (2001), short films Rural Crisis (1999), Search (2002), and TV film Nowhere to Land (2000).
Since the early 2000s, Helen Thomson has appeared in the TV series Bad Cop, Bad Cop (2002-2003), Blue Heelers (2003), Stupid Stupid Man (2006-2008), Mr & Mrs Murder (2013), Top of the Lake (2017), Doctor Doctor (2016-2017), Rake (2014-2018), Bad Mothers (2019), among others.
