At the age of 20, he joined improvisational classes at The Second City in Detroit and eventually became a member. McNamara soon began performing at the Second City Theater.

Kevin McNamara transitioned from theatre to TV and film in the late 2000s. He had moved from Detroit to Los Angeles for a change in his career.

His debut screen role was in the 2008 episode of the TV series Mystery ER. This was followed by minor appearances in the TV series Cold Case (2010), My Roommate the (2010), NCIS: Los Angeles (2012), Justified (2013), etc. His role as Luther Montague in five episodes of the series Suit Up (2012-2013) gained him much recognition.
