Early Days

Phyllis Smith honestly shared that she never thought she would one day become an actress. When young, in the years the 1970s and 1980s, Smith was an inspiring burlesque performer, ballet dancer, and professional jazz dancer and eventually worked as a cheerleader for the old St. Louis Cardinals football team. However, a critical knee injury diverted her entire career.

At first, she took a job as a receptionist. Gradually, Phyllis Smith became a casting assistant, whose job was to read with different actors at their auditions. The opportunity gave her a way into the series The Office. She was hired to help cast The Office, reading to the actors during the auditions.

The writers of the hit series were so impressed with her readings that they created Phyllis Vance, just for Smith. She went on to show a great performance on her set.

Phyllis Smith has also appeared in Celebrity Family Feud (June 2008), Bad Teacher (2011: Supporting role), Inside Out (2015: voice acting), and Netflix series The OA (2016).
