His parents raised him alongside his three siblings – brother Tyler Francks, sister Traane Francks, and older sister Cree Summers who is an actress as well as a singer.

Francks appeared on the Canadian TV channel MuchMusic before embarking on his career as an actor. His debut screen role was in the 1995 TV movies Black Fox: The Price of Peace and Black Fox: Good Men and Bad. This was followed by appearances in the films One Heart Broken Into Song (1999), Love Come Down (2000), etc, in the TV series Twice in a Lifetime (2001), and in several TV movies such as Love Song (2000).

Finally, Rainbow Sun Francks was cast as Lt. Aiden Ford in the TV series Stargate: Atlantis in 2004. He portrayed the recurring character for a total of 25 episodes, until 2008 and is considered his breakthrough role.
