Who is Lena Dunham?

Lena Dunham's creativity, love for writing, and acting are the facts that have made her a big name in Hollywood. Starting with the breakthrough feature film Tiny Furniture, she has now portrayed roles in numerous series and films.

Lena Dunham – Age, Parents, Siblings

Lena Dunham was born on May 13, 1986, in New York City, U.S.A. Her father Carroll Dunham worked as a painter and her mother Laurie Simmons who worked as an artist, photographer, and member of The Pictures Generation. She has a younger sibling- a sister named Grace Dunham.

Education, Ethnicity

For her education, Dunham attended Saint Ann's School. She also attended The New School for a year and transferred to Oberlin College. From the latter, she graduated in 2008 with a degree in creative writing.

Her ethnicity includes English, Scottish, Welsh, German, and Ashkenazi-Jewish.

Lena Dunham – Boyfriend, Husband, Children, Divorce

Dunham started to date Jack Antonoff in 2012. Antonoff is the lead guitarist of the band Fun and also a founder of Bleachers. They dated for 5 years, until December 2017.

In January 2020 with People, she revealed that after splitting from Antonoff she briefly got engaged to her boyfriend, kept on dating a series of boyfriends, and finally is taking a break from dating.

She married her boyfriend Luis Felber on September 27, 2021, after a year of dating.

Lena Dunham – Career

Early Days

While still a student, Lena Dunham began producing several independent short films and uploaded them on YouTube. After several short films, she finally received her breakthrough with the 2010 semi-autobiographic feature film Tiny Furniture. The film was successful, earning several prestigious awards. 

Lena Dunham then was signed by HBO. She went on to create the television series, Girls, which first aired on April 15, 2012. She wrote, directed as well as starred in the critically acclaimed series. The series ran for a total of 6 seasons.

She has also starred in the drama series Scandal (2015), Nobody Walks  (2012), her mother’s film My Art (2016), Adventure Time (2014-2016), My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea (2016), American Horror Story: Cult (2017), Camping (2018), as Catherine "Gypsy" Share in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

In 2015, she along with Jenni Konner, co-founded Lenny Letter, a feminist online newsletter. The newsletter included articles written by Jennifer Lawrence, Alicia Keys, etc. At its height, Lenny Letter had around 500,000 subscribers. 

But due to a lack of subscribers and the inability to build the website on other platforms, Konner and Dunham have decided to shut down the newsletter.

On the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Dunham has worked with Dakota Fanning, Margaret Qualley, Luke Perry, Julia Butters, Timothy Olyphant.

Books

Lena Dunham signed a $3.5 million deal with Random House to publish her first book in 2012. The book which is actually an essay collection titled Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned", was published in September 2014. 

In 2016 it was revealed that Dunham is writing her second book which will be published by Random House.

Lena Dunham – Controversy, Health issues

Lena Dunham has been the subject of several controversies, right from her college days.

When a student at Oberlin College, a video of her in a bikini, brushing her teeth in the public fountain went viral on YouTube. She had received severe backlash for her actions. The New Yorker's Rebecca Mead said, "Her blithe willingness to disrobe without shame caused an outburst of censure from viewers."

In November 2017, she denounced actress Aurora Perrineau's accusation of sexual assault and rape by Murray Miller, in 2012, when Perrineau was 17 and Miller was 35. She later released a highly criticized apology for lying about her "insider information".

"When someone I knew, someone I had loved as a brother, was accused, I did something inexcusable: I publicly spoke up in his defense. There are few acts I could ever regret more in this life. I didn't have the 'insider information' I claimed but rather blind faith in a story that kept slipping and changing and revealed itself to mean nothing at all. I wanted to feel my workplace and my world were safe, untouched by the outside world (a privilege in and of itself, the privilege of ignoring what hasn't hurt you) and I claimed that safety at cost to someone else, someone very special."

Due to these issues, American writer Zinzi Clemmons announced that she would no longer contribute to Lenny Letter, adding Dunham's racism was "well-known" and suggested women of color "divest" from Dunham.

Again in 2016, she was a subject of controversy when she said during a podcast that she wished she'd had an abortion so that she could better understand women who have. She later apologized on Instagram.

Dunham was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder as a child. For medication, she has been taking a low dose of an antidepressant.

In February 2018, she revealed in an essay for Vogue that she had deiced to have a hysterectomy due to endometriosis.
