Jeff Franklin – Career

Jeff Franklin worked as a substitute teacher in his hometown before he opted to become a writer. His first was with the ABC show House of Comics which he both wrote and produced.

For the series, he wrote three comedians living together in a house. But as ABC wanted the show to be a family show, Franklin added children.

He recalled how he came up with the hit series,

“I came up with possibly the laziest idea for a sitcom ever, a show called “House of Comics” about three single guys sharing a house trying to make it as stand-ups. The Lorimar TV guys asked me who are the characters? I said whoever we cast because they will be playing themselves. (Told you it was lazy.) ABC wanted to meet with me, but asked if I could please come in with a family show.

So I made one guy a widower with three kids, and thought let’s make one a baby, because hey, that’s one less character to write. The three “dads” morphed into a comic, a sportscaster and a rocker, because I like comedy, sports and rock ’n’ roll. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized my lazy idea had accidentally turned into a very strong premise for a TV comedy.”

The show later came to be known as Full House which ran for successful eight years from 1987 to 1995.

After the success of Full House, he left it in 1992 to write Hangin' with Mr. Cooper which starred comedian Mark Curry. He also is the writer of  It's Garry Shandling's Show, Malcolm & Eddie, The First Olsen twins (Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen) movie To Grandmother's House We Go, To Grandmother's House We Go, Just One of the Guys (1985),  Summer School (1987).

In addition, he has also worked with Stuart Little (1999), Just One of the Guys (1985), Love Stinks  (1999), Summer School (1987), Laverne & Shirley (1979–81), Head Over Heels (1997), Love That Girl! (2010), among others. In 2007, Jeff Franklin had come up with the idea for the spinoff series. But the network did not pick up his ideas. He said,

"It's amazing to me that it took so long to set it up. This was way before reboot fever, but it felt like a no-brainer to me. All of this excitement that's happening now with reboots, I knew all of that was there and that there would be this kind of interest. But the networks we pitched it to just didn't seem to understand that."

In April 2015, Netflix announced that they would pick up Fuller House, the spin-off of Full House.
